In a move that could give President Trump the ability to fire the lone Democrat on the Federal Communications Commission, he has nominated Danielle Thumann Severs to serve as a Republican commissioner on the FCC. If confirmed, it would give the Commission a fourth member — and allow Trump to fire Commissioner Anna Gomez without leaving the body without the three-person quorum it needs to function.
Severs, a North Carolina native, is already working at the FCC as a senior counsel to Chairman Brendan Carr. She has been working alongside Carr since August 2024 in what is her second tour of duty at the FCC. Severs earlier served as legal adviser in Commissioner Carr’s Office from March 2021 until July 2023, and then left to work in the private sector on government relations matters for a nationwide telecommunications infrastructure provider. Earlier in her career, Severs worked as a communications attorney in the Washington office of Wilkinson Barker Knauer where she worked with clients in both the media and telecom industries.
