The New York Times hires a new reporter on Metro

We are thrilled to announce that Claire Fahy will join Metro as a general assignment reporter. 

You probably thought Claire was already on Metro. Versatile and prolific, she has been a force on our desk in temporary stints, as a fellow in 2023 and more recently as a fill-in for reporters who have been on leaves and sabbaticals. 

In her permanent role, Claire’s duties will include breaking news, live dispatches, enterprise and analysis. Look for her to contribute to our election coverage soon. 

Since starting at The New York Times as a news assistant in 2021, Claire has written for several other desks, including Express, Sports, National and Travel. She has broken news and developed enterprise on some of the biggest storylines, from the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles to Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis.

Steven McElroy, executive director of newsroom operations at The Times, recalled how Claire was the clear choice when she applied to be a news assistant. “She won me over, and fast,” he wrote. “Claire has continued to grow as a reporter over the past few years, and I’m thrilled for her to move into a full-time reporting role on our mighty Metro desk,” he said.

On Metro, she has already delivered memorable stories during her fellowship: a grove of trees in rural Ireland dedicated to the victims of 9/11, Gov. Kathy Hochul at the Vatican and the governor’s visit to her family’s hometown in the rugged West of Ireland. 

More recently, Claire has contributed to our coverage of the Midtown building that nearly collapsed, and she has led us through the worlds of New Jersey diners and last meals at the Red Lobster in Times Square.

“What I appreciate most about Claire is her energy: She’s not the kind of reporter who takes an unanswered email as a ‘no’ or a slow news day as an opportunity to kick back. She’s always looking for her next story, and her persistence and creativity lead to great, fun stories all the time. I’m excited that Metro gets to have her full time now,” said Shauntel Lowe, Metro day editor.

Claire previously worked at CBS News, where she was a broadcast associate at 60 Minutes and CBS This Morning. She is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, and a proud alumna of the student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, where she was sports editor. She grew up in San Francisco and spent a portion of her childhood in Dublin, Ireland, which was also the site of her first internship, at The Irish Times.

Her official start date as an official reporter is Aug. 9.
