CNBC hires Cory Schouten as director of member strategy and engagement

Cory Schouten is joining CNBC as director of member strategy and engagement.

Most recently, he served as editor-in-chief of Crain’s New York Business, where he led the newsroom, sharpened coverage priorities and developed a more data-driven approach to audience strategy. During his tenure, Crain’s earned a number of awards for its news coverage and special projects.

Previously, Schouten held several roles at The Wall Street Journal focused on developing new ways to serve and engage readers. As head of new formats, he worked on newsletters, alerts and live experiences, including a Q&A format that paired video with subscriber questions. Earlier, he led an overhaul of the Journal’s newsletter portfolio and its approach to reader comments.

Schouten also teaches a well-regarded business of media class as an adjunct professor at Columbia University. He was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow at Columbia, where he earned a master’s degree in economics and business journalism. He received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student.
