The Metro desk prides itself on putting the “New York” in The New York Times, and if New York never sleeps, the desk shouldn’t either.
As we move to strengthen our coverage of the city and region, we want to make sure that our report is as robust on Saturdays and Sundays as it is during the week. That means adding a weekend editor to our team.
We are pleased to announce that Robert Barba, a longtime journalist who most recently worked as an accountability editor overseeing reporters covering Albany and the environment at WNYC and Gothamist, will step into the new role.
Robert has a well of experience in breaking news and enterprise. He previously worked as spot news editor for Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal and as news editor on the U.S. news team at The Journal.
He was on the team that produced The Journal’s 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre feature, which was a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting.
“Robert is a seasoned and unflappable journalist who has worked in some of the highest pressure newsrooms,” said Andrés Martinez, deputy editor for crime and justice on Metro, who worked with Robert at The Journal. “This will make him indispensable to an ambitious weekend operation.”
Beginning his journalism career as a business desk intern at The Denver Post and Boulder Daily Camera, Robert also has deep knowledge of the finance industry. He covered the 2008 financial crisis at American Banker. He remains a proponent of business journalism and is the president of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing.
Robert, a native of Denver, is also a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
He begins on Aug. 24.
