The Tacoma Weekly, a small Washington newspaper, has been hit with a $15,000 fine for allegedly peddling coverage and endorsement of political candidates as part of an $2,500 ad package.

I'm outraged, but not because of Tacoma Weekly's shady news practices. That's been happening, in one way or another, almost since the invention of movable type.
No, this is what outrages me: "Washington state law prohibits news outlets from selling “an endorsement, article or other communication in the news media promoting or opposing a candidate." Does nobody but me recognize that this law is a blatant violation of the First Amendment's guarantee of a free and unregulated press?
