POLITICO relaunches POLITICO Magazine

We are closing out the week with some exciting news: we are relaunching POLITICO Magazine as a weekly publication focused on original reporting about the people and ideas that shape power around the world.

The first stories of our inaugural relaunch issue will go live tomorrow morning (June 12): a richly reported feature from Sophia Cai on the secret U.S. political history of the 2026 World Cup, and a deep dive from Alice Ollstein and Megan Messerly on the untold story of why the Trump Administration reversed itself on HIV prevention. Over the weekend we will have Samuel Benson on how Vivek Ramaswamy is navigating questions of race and religion in his quest to be Ohio’s next governor; Ian Ward on the New Right’s plan to use VC-backed charter communities to Christianize America; and Jack Blanchard on Andy Burnham, the audacious British mayor looking to beat the populist right and then topple Keir Starmer. These are exactly the kinds of stories the new Magazine exists to tell.

The Magazine will now offer a curated issue each weekend and a dedicated newsletter will publish on Sundays to bring the full package together.

With this relaunch, we are making a fresh promise to our readers: each issue will contain stylish storytelling and revelatory reporting about the people, places, and decisions shaping global politics and policy. We will follow power across the major centers — Wall Street, Silicon Valley and beyond — and into the less obvious places: the technologists rewriting the rules, the cultural figures shaping how we see the world, the operators and fixers who rarely make the news but without whom nothing moves.

There is no one better placed to cover power than all of you: our reporters and editors across the world who are closest to the rooms where decisions are made, experts on the process, and have the most knowledgeable sources. The Magazine is one of the ways we will project our journalism further and faster.

POLITICO excels at scoopy news stories, authoritative newsletters, and incisive analysis at a relentless pace. The Magazine is a place where we can practice the art of a different kind of storytelling that supports our formidable expertise and ability to drive the agenda with narrative, color, and yes — even some anecdotal ledes.

To help propel this work, we are delighted to share three personnel moves:

We are thrilled to welcome Kathy Gilsinan as Senior Staff Writer, Magazine. Kathy joins us from Puck where she oversaw Washington coverage, from the rising new power brokers to the faltering institutions and the lurches of Trumpian foreign policy from isolationism to serial regime change. Kathy is also a longtime friend of the Magazine — read her terrific profile of Erin Hawley, the lawyer at the center of the Supreme Court's major abortion fights. We were taken with her creative story ideas, the smart way she thinks about the POLITICO reader, and the personable energy she brings to every interaction. She will start in Rosslyn on June 30, reporting to Dylon Jones.

On that note, Dylon Jones has been promoted to Senior Editor, Magazine. Anyone who has worked with him over his four years here will immediately understand the reasons for this promotion: his sharp eye for narrative tension, thoughtful editing technique, and the cheerful and dynamic approach he brings to his work — this relaunch emphatically included.

And finally, Catherine Kim steps into the role of Reporter, a recognition of how central her steady cadence of astute stories will be to the Magazine's mission. She will focus on the people and trends influencing culture in this political moment and on comparative politics with an eye toward East Asia.

Congratulations to Kathy, Dylon, and Catherine on their new roles — and our thanks to the many others across POLITICO who have supported the Magazine’s relaunch over months of work.

The first issue this weekend isn’t the culmination of that effort, but just the start of a lively new era for the mag. We can't wait to keep building it with you all.
