Greg Tufaro, the award-winning New Jersey journalist whose three decades of reporting on local high school and college sports helped bring some of the state’s most important issues to public attention, died Monday (Aug. 10). He was 59.

For generations of athletes, coaches, parents and readers in Central Jersey, Tufaro was more than a sportswriter. He was a relentless reporter, a champion for young athletes and a journalist who believed that even the smallest community story mattered.

A lifelong Edison resident and graduate of St. Joseph High School in Metuchen and Rutgers University, Tufaro spent nearly 30 years in journalism working for the Home News Tribune in East Brunswick and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey. His assignments ranged from Rutgers athletics to nearly every scholastic sport, though he became a fixture on the New Jersey high school wrestling scene later in his sportswriting career.
