News media companies already possess something technology platforms spend enormous sums trying to acquire: trusted relationships with local businesses. Those relationships often begin with advertising, but they do not have to end there. By helping advertisers establish, manage and improve their broader digital presence, a news organization can create recurring revenue while becoming a more valuable and enduring business partner. Duda provides the white-label technology that can help make that transition possible.
Duda is an enterprise website platform designed for organizations that create and manage websites for large numbers of business customers. Its technology operates behind the scenes, allowing the company offering the service to retain its own branding, pricing and customer relationships.
For a news publisher, that creates an opportunity to offer professionally designed websites and related digital services without developing and continually maintaining an entire website platform internally. The publisher’s sales team maintains the local relationship, while Duda supplies the infrastructure, production tools, integrations, security and technical foundation required to deliver the service efficiently.
The result is not simply another product to sell. It is a way for a news organization to move from selling individual advertising campaigns to supporting the long-term digital success of its local business customers.
Turning local relationships into recurring revenue
Local businesses need more than exposure. They need effective websites, accurate business information, strong search visibility, online booking, e-commerce capabilities, customer reviews and tools that convert attention into measurable business.
Many local merchants struggle to assemble those capabilities on their own. They may rely on an outdated website, disconnected vendors or consumer-grade technology that becomes increasingly difficult to manage. Others have no meaningful digital strategy beyond a social media page or basic business listing.
News organizations are well positioned to address that gap. They already understand the local market, regularly speak with business owners and have sales teams that know their customers’ challenges. Adding website and digital-presence services allows them to provide something more enduring than a temporary advertising placement.
A website offering can generate setup fees, monthly service revenue and opportunities to sell additional capabilities. More importantly, it can deepen the customer relationship. When a local business relies on its media partner for its website, search presence and digital tools, that relationship becomes broader and potentially more durable.
Duda enables its partners to deliver those services under their own brands. The local advertiser does not need to know which technology operates underneath the service. To that business, the news organization remains the trusted provider.
When maintaining proprietary technology stopped making sense
Italiaonline offers a useful example of how the model can work. The company is a major European digital media and marketing organization that provides online advertising, website development, social media management, e-commerce and other digital services.
Italiaonline once operated its own proprietary website builder. Over time, however, maintaining and updating that internal platform became increasingly difficult to justify. The company needed modern technology that could support its digital-services business without requiring it to continually invest internal resources in rebuilding the underlying software.
Italiaonline selected Duda as its technology provider and Spotzer as its website fulfillment partner. The transition required moving 35,000 existing customer websites from Italiaonline’s legacy system to Duda.
This was far more complicated than transferring files from one server to another. Duda studied the structure, layouts and patterns within the legacy platform and created customized migration technology. Existing navigation, headers, content and widgets had to be mapped into the new system. Spotzer then reviewed each migrated website, made necessary adjustments and communicated with customers throughout the process.
The 35,000-site changeover was completed in approximately 10 months. According to the original case study, each customer migration, including revisions and approval, averaged less than one week.
Following the transition, Italiaonline continued using Duda as the technology behind its branded website offering. The company could concentrate on serving customers and expanding its digital business rather than carrying the expense and operational burden of maintaining proprietary website software.
A company executive said the partnership allowed Italiaonline to remain competitive with modern technology “without putting undue strain on our internal resources.”
That lesson should resonate with North American news media companies. Building technology internally can offer control, but it also demands continuing investment in developers, security, product enhancements, hosting, integrations and support. A white-label platform allows a media company to retain control of the brand and customer relationship while relying on a specialized technology company to maintain the infrastructure.
Preparing local businesses for AI-powered discovery
The challenge has become even more urgent as artificial intelligence changes how consumers find businesses.
Discovery is moving beyond a familiar list of search results. Consumers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI platforms to recommend a restaurant, contractor, retailer or professional service. To make those recommendations, AI systems need accurate, structured and sufficiently detailed information about each business.
That places new demands on business websites. A basic homepage with an address and telephone number may no longer be enough. Businesses need richer descriptions, individual service pages, useful articles, accurate metadata and clearly organized information that both people and machines can understand.
Italiaonline recently adopted Duda’s Editor 2.0 and AI-assisted production tools to help address those demands. Anna Gavazzi, Italiaonline’s Web & Media Services Marketing Director, said, “Implementing Duda’s Editor 2.0 has made it much easier for us to create feature-rich, beautiful websites quickly.”
Italiaonline reported that its teams could produce websites that were 20% to 30% larger without increasing the resources devoted to design and development or extending production deadlines. Duda’s AI capabilities can assist with site creation, page design, written content and SEO metadata.
Gavazzi offered a concise assessment of the experience: “Our team loves working with the platform.”
For news media companies, the significance extends beyond faster website production. AI-powered discovery creates a new problem that local advertisers may not know how to solve. A publisher can become the partner that helps those businesses build a more complete, accurate and discoverable online presence.
A platform behind the publisher’s brand
Duda’s value proposition rests on what its partners can offer their customers—not on placing the Duda name in front of those customers.
The platform can be white-labeled, integrated into existing systems and adapted to different business models. A news organization may offer fully managed websites, allow customers to make approved changes themselves or combine the two approaches. Roles and permissions help protect essential design elements while allowing collaboration.
Publishers can also build packages around different customer needs, from a straightforward local-business website to more sophisticated offerings incorporating e-commerce, booking, memberships and other capabilities.
The broader opportunity is to create a connected digital-services relationship. Advertising attracts attention. A strong website converts that attention into inquiries, calls, appointments or sales. Ongoing optimization helps the business remain competitive as consumer behavior and search technology continue to change.
News organizations do not need to become software developers to provide those services. They need a capable technology partner, a clear offering and a commitment to helping local businesses succeed.
Duda supplies the platform. The news organization brings the brand, market knowledge and trusted relationships. Together, those capabilities can help publishers create new revenue, improve advertiser retention and give local businesses better tools to prosper in an increasingly competitive digital marketplace.
