In an imagined heavenly newsroom — where eternal truths scroll on massive screens and coffee is ethically sourced, and you can smoke three packs a day without damaging anyone — three legends of American journalism met in outrage: Edward R. Murrow, who exposed McCarthyism; Walter Cronkite, America’s most trusted anchor whose Vietnam War assessment shifted public opinion against the U.S. war; and Don Hewitt, acclaimed creator of “60 Minutes.” These icons, whose careers defined courageous, journalistic integrity, issued a rare joint condemnation of their home network, CBS News, for abruptly canceling a “60 Minutes” investigative segment scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, which, like so many previous segments broadcast over the decades, was certain to upset the president currently in power.

Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi’s piece examined brutal conditions in El Salvador’s Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) mega-prison, to which the Trump administration deported over 250 Venezuelan migrants in March, despite a federal court order halting those deportations.

The segment featured harrowing interviews with former deportees describing torture, overcrowding and other blatant abuse, corroborated by November’s Human Rights Watch report titled “You Have Arrived in Hell.” It detailed systemic beatings, electric shocks, waterboarding, forced nudity and cells crushing 80 men into a space built for half as many — without sunlight.

Many deportees, including asylum seekers with no U.S. criminal records, were sent there under Trump’s highly questionable use of the 18th-century Alien Enemies Act, ignoring long-established due process and current federal court rulings.

CBS News’ brand new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, pulled the story hours before airtime, citing it as “not ready” and needing White House responses. Weiss, appointed after Paramount acquired her platform, The Free Press, last October, has a background in opinion journalism and views that are often critical of legacy media. Critics warned her role would be to shift CBS toward right-leaning editorializing and mostly avoid doing damage to Trump.

Back in journalism heaven, the CBS legends’ imagined statement was scathing: “Weiss’ decision betrays 60 Minutes’ hard-earned reputation for fearless reporting.” They dismissed the “no White House response” excuse for not airing the segment as nonsense — administrations routinely decline comment, yet stories are broadcast.

The deceased CBS icons accuse Weiss of “engaging in blatant strategic political protectionism,” helping Trump amid mounting scandals, including unexpected Supreme Court rebukes on his deportations.

Murrow’s ethos of “Illuminate the dark corners,” Cronkite’s meticulous impartiality, and Hewitt’s committed pursuit of truth through tough interviews set the standards “60 Minutes” once upheld, earning over 100 Emmys.

Weiss defended the delay as needing balance and further reporting. However, Alfonsi called it “political,” not editorial, noting the piece had cleared multiple reviews and legal checks, and that, as usual, CBS had requested reaction on camera from the Trump administration, which chose not to participate. Weiss’ pull sparked internal outcry, with some staff threatening to resign publicly. Weiss said later that no amount of outrage would change her course.

This imagined heavenly rebuke highlights a real crisis: Can legacy networks uphold independent journalism amid polarized pressures and news organizations being gobbled up by corporations, which are far more concerned with pleasing Trump than with their sacred mission of exposing political corruption and cruelty?

Cronkite signed off each night’s broadcast with these words, “And that’s the way it is,” — but only if journalists fight today to keep it so.
