Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr is signaling that broadcasters should prepare for a more assertive regulatory environment, arguing in an interview Monday that stations operating under government licenses face obligations that set them apart from other media platforms. He also dismissed criticism that politics are what is driving his actions.
“If your culture is making sure that the laws on the books are enforced, I guess I’m a culture warrior. But broadcasters are different,” Carr said. “There’s a public interest obligation. We have equal opportunity rules on the books. We have rules that prevent discrimination based on race and gender. We have rules requiring that broadcasters actually identify the needs of their local community and serve it. And we’re an FCC that is going to enforce those requirements.”
In an interview with CNBC, he said that media companies that don’t like the scrutiny have options, like distributing via cable or YouTube.
