Additionally, the magazine cited 267 attacks and threats, with many mentioning women’s appearance and sexuality, including death and rape warnings. About a decade ago, Peter Laufer, Ph.D., was in Italy enjoying a leisurely lunch with a publisher. They were making plans for an Italian translation of a book he’d written, “The Dangerous World of Butterflies,” when their discussion turned to the plight of news and the public’s changing news consumption habits. Where they sat, they weren’t far from where the “slow food movement” was born — for which quality ingredients and their provenance from farm to table are valued above speed and cost-efficiency. Laufer conceived of a similar concept applied to newsgathering, what he called “slow news.”

John and Jennifer Garrett created Community Impact, a collection of hyperlocal news publications, in the game room of their home in Pflugerville, Texas, in 2005. The company now reaches 2.6 million households and 160,000 email inboxes. Garrett worked at the Austin Business Journal when the idea for his business began; he envisioned Community Impact as a business journal that focused on hyperlocal content.

The sports-betting pie is increasing at an enormous rate. The American Gaming Association reports that during August 2022, sports betting generated $471.4 million in revenues, a 116.2% increase from August 2021. For the year to date, those revenues were $3.97 billion, a 69.6% increase compared to the first eight months of 2021. The smart people in sports media recognized very quickly that reporting on sports betting was a natural extension of its overall coverage.

For more than two-thirds of journalists in the U.S., Twitter is their go-to social media site for work. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, journalists use Twitter more often than Facebook, and they use it more than Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube combined. Thanks to Elon Musk’s chaotic takeover of the popular social media site, that relationship is suddenly in jeopardy.

Reporting on prisons in the United States can be challenging and often frustrating for even the most respected publications and seasoned journalists. It can't be approached like any other beat. The good news is that organizations are penetrating the confusing, dense veil of prison policies and prison life. And, they’re supporting prisoners who dare to write as incarcerated journalists and sharing tips with editors and journalists on the outside who want to report on prisons.
